Folk Singer Josh Ritter's Chatham Concert Sells Out

The Sanctuary Concerts host the popular singer Saturday.

Head Scott Sheldon confirmed Saturday's concert with folk singer and songwriter Josh Ritter has sold out.

Ritter is described by Sheldon as a "wildly popular and dynamic" artist and performer. Paste Magazine named him one of the World's 100 Best Living Songwriters in 2006.

The Moscow, Idaho native was also acclaimed by The New York Times, which said of Ritter, "[H]e sets out to carry a world of ideas on a few basic chords….there is no limit to the depth and ambition of his songs.”

Writing for Esquire, Mary-Louise Parker said, “If you love music and have a device on which to play it, you should listen to Josh Ritter.”

Ritter was prepared to study neuroscientists, like both his parents, when in high school he discovered Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country"on his parents' copy of "Nashville Skyline." After that, he bought his first guitar from Kmart and changed his major from neuroscience to the independent and self-created "American History Through Narrative Folk Music."

While still a student at Oberlin College in Ohio, Ritter recorded his first self-titled album. After studying at the School of Scottish Folk Studies in Scotland, living in New England and touring Ireland with The Frames, he was able to become a full-time musician and performer.

Besides his first self-released album, Ritter has released five studio albums, four live albums and multiple EPs. His albums "The Animal Years," "The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter" and "So Runs the World Away" were all warmly received by critics.

His song "Wings was covered by Joan Baez and he has twice been a musical guest of David Letterman.

Ritter does not only write songs. In 2011 his first novel, "Bright's Passage," was published by Dial Press.
