Sandy: How to Help Your Fellow Chathamites

Carpools, blankets and bottled water are all ways you can donate.

As the weather gets colder in the wake of Tropical Storm Sandy, many Chatham residents may wonder how they can help their neighbors.

Several township residents cooperated to establish a firewood drive at the Sutton Woods Pool House Sunday. To donate firewood or arrange for pickup, call (908) 313-8949.

With the Morris/Essex line of the New Jersey Transit suspended, many Chathamites need a ride to New York City. A hard copy list of people looking for carpools have been posted at every warming station in the Chathams, including:

  • The Chatham Borough Fire Department commons room
  • Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church
  • St. Paul's Episcopal Church
  • Chatham Emergency Squad building on Spring Street
  • The Library of the Chathams
  • The Chatham Club
  • Angie's Luncheonette
  • Arminio's Italian Corner

Additionally, residents may also call Janice Piccolo at the Chatham Borough Municipal Building to get their names added to the list. Piccolo can be reached at (973) 635-0674 ext. 200.

In the borough, local businesses gathered to establish drop-off locations for donations. Jabberwocky, Kitchen Intuitions, Bliss and the Chatham Sports Shop are all places where residents can drop off the following items to donate:

  • new blankets
  • new sleeping bags
  • canned food
  • bottled water
  • personal care items
  • First Aid supplies
  • baby caire items
  • flashlights and batteries
  • paper towels and toilet paper
  • cleaning supplies

The Red Cross needs donations, both financial and, well, bloody. According to a statement from the New Jersey chapter of the American Red Cross, Sandy caused the cancellations of several blood drives and caused the loss of as many as 11,000 blood products.

To make a financial donation or to schedule an appointment to donate blood, visit www.redcross.org or call 800-733-2767. The next blood drive in the area will be Saturday at the Millburn Free Public Library.

St Patrick Church, which has had power all week, has done NOTHING to help the people of Chatham. What happened to the "One hand, one heart?". Shame on you Father Bob and Mrs Hobbie

With no power until last night, I spent a lot of time walking and driving around Chatham Borough this past week. The one consistent bright spot in this mess was the Public Works Dept. In contrast to the almost non-existent JCP&L crews, the Borough trucks were everywhere, from morning to night, seven days a week, cleaning up and helping out. They have done an outstanding job and we all owe them our thanks. If you don't appreciate their value, check out the Chatham Twp. notices where residents (many of whom are still in conditions worse than those in the Borough)are told to bring their brush and debris to the Twp. mulch area on their own! Thanks guys!

I am a parishioner and got an email that the parish center was open Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Not sure how many people knew this. But I agree they should have done more. Open the center ovenight, open the kitchen, etc..

You could not be more wrong Ella! The info about St pats was posted on the boro website, yes I said the boro website. And Fr. Mahoney sent an email to the Corpus Christi parishioners about it. It was also listed on the list of warming and charging stations that has been circulating. I guess if the Catholics are not personally knocking on your door to carry you there, then you will complain. Catholic bashing..the last acceptable form of hatred in this country and alive and well in Chatham!

And there are no two finer people than Fr. Bob and Dr. Hobbie!

Ella, I didn't see your comment as Catholic-bashing at all. Quite frankly, I've been looking at the list of charging and warming stations, and only saw Ogden and St. Pauls. Perhaps I missed it. And if I did miss St Pats offers, I would expect that a fellow townsperson might correct me and spread the word about how St. Pats has also been offering assistance, rather than bashing me. I'm sure that's not what St. Pats is about.
Chathammom November 05, 2012 at 05:23 PM
Tere215: why is this considered catholic bashing? the point is that st pats appeared to be open only sat and Sunday afternoons. Not everyone knew this. Not everyone has Internet access. Why could they not stay open overnight and during the week? other churches on Main Street were open during the week. I personally never saw st pats on the list of charging stations you mentioned but I may have missed it.

If the gate off Green Village Road is open then JCPL should be at the sub station. Why not send our police SUV down to check?

If the Township wants to help - truly help - please reconsider your stance on the removal of branches and other storm-related debris. To suggest residents use precious gasoline to drive back and forth to recycle branches is bordering on insane. Further to that point, the Township has wisely (in my view) moved official Halloween trick-or-treating to Saturday. But without help from the Township in clearing the branches, there is no chance the yards and sidewalks and driveways the kids run through to trick-or-treat will be clear in time. It's fascinating to watch Township officials beg residents for help while refusing to step up in the wake of a storm that has left so many in dire conditions. I've helped many of my neighbors throughout this storm, but many of the branches are simply too large to transport safely. How about some help where it is actually needed? Unlike the power, this is something the Township has the money and resources to deal with.

Why Chatham Township Sandy's power restoration screws would not order uotstate or military crews electric power special equipment crews knowing that ALWAYS even in little regular thunderstorms ALL RIVER RD AND TERRACE DR ...apartments condos HAVE BEEN WUTHOUT THE ELECTRICITY?? What kind of people who do nit have a human brains are managing Chatham's Condos Associations?? It is ridiculous that knowing that THESE specific areas ALWAYS before used to problems with delivering electric power? In last year during Irene storm we also do not have a power for 6 DAYS? So, now we are repairing deeper problems and "OUR LOVELY "electric company trying to solve these repairs without National Government or Military Crews keeping us residents under 31 FARANHITE DEEGRE temperature outside in November?!!!! It is look like someone saving the Monet ie harassing residents?

What kind of people who do not have an intelligent, hyman brains are managing Chatham's Condos Associations?? TCG very well said. I'm sure residents would be more than happy to volunteer in assisting the township in loading brush into township trucks.
jjj November 05, 2012 at 07:36 PM
Anna. That is the most incoherent passage i have ever read. In twelve lines of content you did not manage to create one complete sentence. I especially enjoyed "hyman brains" and "faranhite deegre". thanks so much . after the week we've all had I could use a good laugh. If you are an immigrant from a non english speaking country i apologize, if not get back in school.

Hear, hear ... I called Public Works this afternoon (Monday 5th) and was told - there is to be NO brush collection. I then spoke with a woman at the Township Administrator's office (who herself still has no power at home) who pointed out that Public Works is - very properly - working flat out to assist in work that will get power restored to everyone. I asked for my message to be relayed to the Powers That Be: we can all agree that power restoration and safety come first ... but after that, PW really should pick up the piles of brush that many of us have worked hard to clear up and leave kerbside. I'm sure I am not the only one with no pickup truck or van onto which I could load a big load of brush (including some long branches) for possibly multiple trips to the recycling center. I suggest you call the office of Thomas E. Ciccarone, Township Administrator, and make the same point ... (973) 635-4600. Good luck to all still awaiting power restoration: the devastating groundwater flood from Irene in August 2011 convinced me to get a generator powered by natural gas ... and I am so grateful for that. Please continue to watch out for falling trees and power lines - any wind will send more of them toppling.
Anna November 05, 2012 at 08:22 PM
Hej jjj Thank you for your great check spelling! IDo you want to rewrite my previous message? I really believe that you want to prove me that you were born here . I expected from someone like you some sentyment....to the the foreighners....but like ALWAYS in this raciest little town I am not surprised that you want to prove me who is smartest? BUT JUST FOR WHA You support to stand by my side to fight to have electricity and hot water. It shows that you feel undervalued to be valued citizen and care about the others. Shame of yourself.....to do not see a way of help the others only to use your anger to fight with me !! Better to fight with these whi are use the correct spelling to make you powerless like you are.

I am writing again ....Does anyone could believe that in little town Chatham Township New Jersey in a huge apartment complexes we still do not have electricity from 7 days and 7 freezing nights? It is Monday, November 5, 2012, 8:14pm....it is 7 days after hurricane Sandy.
edward smith November 06, 2012 at 12:45 AM
I live on Scenery Hill Dr. Last year it was 6 days before power was restored we have been told to expect it back Wednesday or 9 days since the storm. This seems unlikely since there is no visible repair work going on. There are rumors we may be out for up to 3 weeks. I hope it isnt true but if it is I would like to know that. Is there any official information anywhere that is reliable?
Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce November 06, 2012 at 02:13 AM
Wow, what a lot of incoherent posts. Bottomline, I would hope that people would work together in times of strife. I hope everyone gets power and can stay warm. In the big picture what is going on in areas far worse hit, makes this seem petty in comparison. Patience and generosity of spirit is what is needed now. Good luck to all....
