Open Space Workday to Clean Up Green Village Pond Conservation Area

Chatham Township Environmental Commission holds 12th annual event on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Chatham Township Environmental Commission will hold its 12th annual Open Space Workday on Saturday.

The event, which will be held rain or shine, will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Green Village Pond Conservation Area, which was once an old homestead and is now Chatham Township property.

The workday will pick up trash, prune multiflora rose and Japanese barberry and spread woodchips on the trail.  This area is habitat for birds and wildflowers.  The goal of the project is to create a pleasant site for nature walks and nature study.

The ShopRite of Chatham donated cotton work gloves and plastic trash bags and Chatham Disposal Co. will pick up of the trash bags after the cleanup.

Those participating should park along Green Village Road across from Melrose Lane. Wear old clothes and sturdy shoes, and if you wish, bring shovels, pruning shears and loppers and your own work gloves, the commission advises.

Plastic bags and cotton work gloves will be provided.  Suitable for families, Scouts, clubs, youth groups, outdoor enthusiasts.  Free refreshments will be available.  Scout merit badge credit is a possibility.  Call Dot Stillinger at 973-377-6992 for more information.
