Chatham's Got Brass

The spin-off of the Chatham Community Band will play at the Chatham Borough Farmers Market.

The Chatham Brass, a quintet spun off seven years ago from the Chatham Community Band, will perform this Saturday at the Chatham Farmer’s Market from 11 a.m. until noon.

Patriotic music, ragtime, and Broadway tunes are just a sampling of the type of music the Chatham Brass likes to play. “It’s your standard toe-tapping music,” said Leader Ed Rummel, a retired engineer and French horn player.

When not playing for Chatham Brass, which performed 44 times last year, Rummel also plays for the Metropolitan Orchestra of New Jersey, the Summit Symphony and the Westfield Community band.

Both Chatham Brass and the Chatham Community Band are nonprofit and travel often to nursing homes and hospitals, reaching out to audiences who cannot afford to pay for live entertainment or because of disabilities are unable to get to performances. Donations are accepted and used to help support their organization.

“We just like to play for audiences. That’s why we do it,” said Rummel.
