Chatham Market-Goers Name 'Orange Valencia' Top Tomato

Tasting at Chatham Borough Farmers Market explored heirloom varieties.

An orange Valencia tomato from Melick's Towne Farm was voted the favorite at an heirloom tomato tasting held at a Chatham Borough Farmers Market this month.

The tomato received 53 votes, and another heirloom from the same farm, Melick's green Aunt Ruby's German tomato, came in second with 52 votes at the Aug. 17 event, which was a "huge success," the borough said in a news release.

A previous heirloom tomato favorite was a purple Cherokee tomato submitted by Muth Family Farm, which won the 2011 competition with 23 votes.
