An orange Valencia tomato from Melick's Towne Farm was voted the favorite at an heirloom tomato tasting held at a Chatham Borough Farmers Market this month.
The tomato received 53 votes, and another heirloom from the same farm, Melick's green Aunt Ruby's German tomato, came in second with 52 votes at the Aug. 17 event, which was a "huge success," the borough said in a news release.
A previous heirloom tomato favorite was a purple Cherokee tomato submitted by Muth Family Farm, which won the 2011 competition with 23 votes.
The Chatham Borough Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Nov. 23 at the Chatham Train Station.
A Chatham Borough Pet Pageant is being planned for one of the markets this fall, with market-goers and their pets to parade and vie for a $10.00 gift certificate donated by the Madison Pet Shop for "the most uniquely dressed pet!"
