Borough Pool to Accept Colony Memberships

Colony Pool will likely not open again this season due to damage sustained during Hurricane Irene.

Nicole Hagner and Nelson Vaughan, the mayors of Chatham Township and Chatham Borough, agreed Tuesday for the Chatham Borough Municipal Pool to accept Colony Pool memberships through the pool's closing on Labor Day.

"I just spoke with Mayor Vaughan, and he is going to make arrangements for our members to go to the Borough Municipal Pool," Hagner said.

Colony Pool sustained "significant damage," in Vaughan's words, during Hurricane Irene and has been closed since Saturday. John Pacelli, the director of the township's Department of Public Works, said one large tree came down at the pool and rain "eroded quite a bit of soil" from the pool area. Much of Colony is covered in mud, he said.

Hagner previously said she hoped Colony Pool would open before Labor Day Weekend, but that plan has been abandoned.

Hagner said Carol Nauta and Brian McNally of the Chatham Recreation Department will arrange for increased staffing at the Chatham Borough Municipal Pool for the anticipated influx of members.

The kiddie pool at the borough pool was closed Monday, but Director Amy Nauta said it would be operational again by Tuesday.

"I think we kind of got lucky compared to a lot of communities," Pacelli said.
