The Madison Area YMCA To Offer LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Starting September

The Madison Area YMCA is pleased to announce that it supports cancer survivors through its new, free initiative that provides opportunities to engage in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. The program begins in September.

This 12-week, research-based program brings together cancer survivors and YMCA staff trained in cancer care to achieve goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; improving confidence and self-esteem; and ultimately practicing a healthy lifestyle, not only as a part of recovery but as a way of life. Survivors are encouraged to come as they are, no matter what stage of wellness they are in.

The Madison Area YMCA received a grant for its LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program to support the implementation. The Madison Area YMCA, the ninth YMCA in New Jersey to run the program, was the only YMCA in the state this year to earn this distinction.

The program was designed to evolve over several years and set the standard for physical activity and wellness programs for cancer survivors throughout the country. By the end of 2013, this innovative program will expand to more than 145 cities across the nation and will have helped more than 13,000 cancer survivors.

The financial awards provided by the 2012 program are currently being implemented at nearly 100 sites including hospitals, cancer centers, universities, and community-based organizations across the nation and will provide support to thousands of people affected by cancer upon completion.

For more information about the program, please contact Madison Area YMCA Senior Director of Healthy Living Joe Gonsalves at 973-822-9622 ext.2242.
