Chatham Township B.S. Troop 121 Sails 80’ Schooner during Seabase High Adventure

Chatham Township B.S. Troop 121 sailed a classic 80’ schooner this past August during a high adventure trip at Seabase in Florida.  With Key West as their port-of-call, 13 scouts and 5 fathers lived and slept on the boat, which was the same kind used by those who first sought the freedom and solitude of the Florida Keys hundreds of years ago. Interesting stops along the adventure included Western Sambo, Stock Island, Boca Grande Key, Man of War Harbor, and Middle Ground. In addition to snorkeling and diving around coral reefs and sunken ships, the scouts dove for lobsters - which they prepared and ate for dinner – and their fishing pursuits yielded a 5’ barracuda, shark and numerous fish.

During the trip, they weathered winds between 10 & 20 knots and rode out a summer squall with horizontal rain.  The boat’s captain, Captain Ron, rated Troop 121 “A+” in awarding his Captain’s Award, and stated that the Troop’s crew was the “best of the summer” and one of the best he’s had in 9 years. The trip, award and photo are documented and framed in the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, where Troop 121 meets every Monday at 7:30pm.
