9/11 Memorial: A ceremony in memory of the 13 Chatham residents who died on 9/11 is planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the memorial behind the Library of the Chathams, 214 Main Street.

The memorial recently was repaired after sustaining some damage during Superstorm Sandy. The ceremony is organized by the 9/11 Memorial Committee. All are invited to attend.

Board of Education: The school board for the School District of the Chathams is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the township municipal building, 58 Meyersville Road. It's the first meeting since schools opened Monday. A report from Superintendent Dr. Michael LaSusa on the start of the school year and enrollment is among the items on the agenda.

I think 9/11 should be a National Day of Remembrance. Other countries, especially in Europe, have such a day to pray, reflect and remember those that lost their lives as a result of war. I know we have Memorial Day, but that honors the military men and women who paid the ultimate price for freedom. We now live in a world where we are hated because of the freedom we enjoy and many civilians have become the target of these indiscriminate attacks.
