Christie also addresses video parody with Newark mayor during his East Hanover meeting.
The focus Wednesday of Gov. Chris Christie's 79th Town Hall meeting was the governor's proposed 10 percent, across-the-board tax cuts. Christie, speaking at the East Hanover Fire Department, said he's determined to deliver the tax break New Jersey residents have been waiting for. “The people of New Jersey haven’t had a tax cut in over a decade," he said. "You’ve made the sacrifices that were necessary to step up and help me balance this budget, and I want to give you some of your money back to spend on your family, not to spend in Trenton." Christie looks to accomplish this despite some opposition across county lines. According to Christie, two of those opposing the proposal in particular—Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden) …

Mayor and governor have fun with their images
Just because they're the state's two most prominent politicians doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. The office of Gov. Chris Christie yesterday released a lighthearted video co-starring Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a peripatetic go-to guy, riffing off his now national-scale image as a man of action following his rescue of a neighbor from a burning building several weeks ago. As the Democratic mayor of the state's largest city is depicted doing everything from coming up with a spare guitar for Bruce Springsteen to catching a falling baby, a faux-frustrated Christie hisses "Booker!" The video was produced for the New Jersey Press Association's Legislative Correspondent's Club show. Click on the video above to see the Cory and Chris…

Alan Routh cites education, other civic causes as Ali Nonnenmacher's passion.
To the Editor: I am writing in support of Laura Ali Nonnenmacher’s candidacy for a spot on the Chatham Township committee. In my three years on the Board of Education for the School District of the Chathams, I worked with Laura on education issues. She has served in leadership positions in the Chatham Parent Teacher Organization. She is a very active, action-oriented person and is generous with Chatham Education Foundation and other civic causes. I’m certain she will make a fine addition to Chatham Township government. I served with her husband John on the Board of Education and know that he is also active in community activities. We are lucky to have such involved citizens in our community. Laura is putting significant effort into …
Shortage of bags occurred while bags were redesigned.
Chatham Borough Engineer Vincent J. DeNave, currently serving as the acting administrator, said residents can expect large kitchen green bags back in stores by Wednesday. B&B Disposal, the borough's waste management vendor, has had to redesign the bags twice because of various flaws. According to DeNave, "the first bag that was used was larger, 42 gallons, but [they didn't have] pleats. It wouldn't fit over the 30-gallon pail, it kept falling in." DeNave said B&B ordered a new 30-gallon bag with pleats. They fit inside the cans, but only held about 23 gallons of trash when full. "What we decided to do was to look at a combination of the two. We sat down with B&B," DeNave said, and came up with a "hybrid" offering the best of both bags. The…
Republican legislators propose naming a highway in northwestern New Jersey for the nation's 40th president.
"The Great Communicator" may soon have a stretch of New Jersey highway named after him. Under a bill introduced earlier this year by Republican legislators in the Deomcrat-controlled Assembly, the late President Ronald Reagan would have a state highway in northwestern New Jersey named in his honor, according to a Newark Star-Ledger article. In February, several Route 15 business owners were split as to whether naming the highway after Reagan would help sales. Only one former president — Warren Harding — has received such as an accolade in New Jersey, with a 4-mile section of Route 48 in Salem County named in his honor, according to the article. If approved by the state Assembly and Senate, and then signed by Gov. Christopher J. Christie…
The agenda for Monday's Chatham Borough Council meeting also includes one proclamation honoring public safety officer and a second discouraging underage drinking.
Documents delegating the recycling of at least 50 percent of materials generated from construction and demolition projects is up for approval in Chatham Borough Monday. The ordinance passed at the April 23 borough council meeting and applies to remodels, additions or alterations worth over $50,000. It excludes single-family and duplex residences. The resolution up for vote Monday will create official documentation for the Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan form, the Construction and Demolition Summary Report form, Construction, Demolition Debris Conversion Worksheet and other general instructions required under the ordinance. Councilman Len Resto said examples of recyclable material from construction sites would include "asphault, ... …

Could take several months to send the license out for bid.
The Chatham Township Committee unanimously approved an ordinance creating a third liquor license on final reading Thursday. By state statute, municipalities can create and bid one consumption liquor license per 3,000 residents. The township currently has a population of about 10,000 people and two consumption licenses. "We have vacancies up in Hickory Tree [Shopping Center]," Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said. "This is just one additional thing [to help] support local businesses." Township Attorney Carl Woodward said the township can draw up specifications for bidders before the license goes out for public bid, including necessary qualifications for the business such as minimal distances from schools and places of worship. Woodward said it…

A second cell tower lease was sent to the Planning Board for review.
The Chatham Township Committee unanimously approved Thursday a contract for the construction and lease of a cell phone tower on municipal property. The tower will have a base of 40-feet x 40-feet, and will be about 120-feet tall, according to Township Mayor Nicole Hagner and Township Attorney Carl Woodward. The lease will bring in "a $38,550 base lease, plus $1,600 a month," Woodward said. "It will bring in well over $55,000." AT&T will rent the tower during the construction of PSE&G's North Central Reliability Project, which will take about two to four years to complete. T-Mobile will also receive service from the tower. The tower will ensure uninterrupted cell phone and 911 service to township residents. It will be constructed near the …
