After a strong start in most borough polling places, poll workers reported slower turnout Tuesday afternoon and evening. District 5 had 149 of 649 registered voters show up before 2:30 p.m., and District 7 had 108 of 716 voters. By 7 p.m., though, poll workers said turnout had slowed down considerably. The candidates for Chatham Borough Mayor are incumbent Nelson Vaughan (D) and three-term Council Member Bruce Harris (R). Harris' runningmates for Chatham Borough Council are Gerald Helfrich and incumbent James Lonergan, both republicans. Democrat Marcy Wecker is also running for one of the two available council seats. Wecker had a family emergency the night of the League of Women Voters' Candidates Forum and was unable to attend. Election Day is Nov. 8.

Candidates for Chatham Borough Mayor and Chatham Borough Council gathered at the Chatham Borough Municipal Building on Monday for the Candidate's Forum, hosted by the League of Women Voters. Marcy Wecker, a candidate for Chatham Borough Council, was unable to attend due to a family medical emergency. The candidates made opening statements and answered questions from attendants. Questions touched on such issues as keeping Chatham affordable for senior citizens, the possible merging of the borough with Chatham Township and which issues are priorities for the candidates. Bruce Harris is the GOP candidate for Chatham Borough Mayor against incumbent Nelson Vaughan. His runningmates are Jim Lonergan and Gerald Helfrich for council, who face Democrat Marcy Wecker for two available spots on the Chatham Borough Council. Harris is trained as an attorney. He holds an MBA and has 15 years of corporate experience. While serving on the Environmental Commission, Dick Plambeck asked Harris to serve out his term as council member while he served as mayor.
