More than 800 youth wrestlers flocked to Chatham this past weekend to participate in two separate events. The Chatham Wrestling Club competes in three separate leagues including the King of The Mat League. This league consists of novice ( first and second year wrestlers) and JV wrestlers from all over the state of New Jersey. On Saturday, December 15, Chatham's youth program played host to more than 350 wrestlers from 7 teams who are participants in this league.
In addition to Chatham, wrestlers from Sparta, Mendham, Randolph, Montville, Westfield, Hopatcong and Madison competed in this event which took place in the Mountainview gym. Chatham's novice and JV wrestlers did a great job in this event. This, however, was just a warmup for Sunday's annual Holiday Tournament. On Sunday, December 16, the Chatham Wrestling Club hosted it's 8th annual novice tournament and 2nd open tournament. This tournament, which took place at Chatham High School, featured more than 460 wrestlers from all over New Jersey, Long Island and Philadelphia.
The tournament opened with the National Anthem which was performed by the Snaps who are students at Chatham High School. Their excellent rendition received a roaring ovation.
The open portion of the tournament was a special event for the club as it was recently selected as a qualifier for the Ohio Tournament of Champions which is the largest indoor wrestling tournament in the world. This national recoginition of Chatham's open tournament was significant, well deserved and the club met the challenges that came with the selection.
Many thanks to Chatham High School for giving our tournament a home. Special thanks to our wrestling family who volunteered many hours of their time to make both events successful. Congratulations to the Chatham wrestlers who participated in this event. Based on their efforts, Chatham took first place at this tournament.
