“Every day I am asked what the secret is to ensuring every child in New Jersey graduates from high school ready for college and career, and I always have one simple response – outstanding teachers.”

Those are the words of NJ Acting Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf in a video address made available Monday on the state's website.

“I began my career as a high school history teacher, and I can honestly say that I never worked harder or felt more rewarded than I did during those four years. We as a state should make sure that we celebrate outstanding educators every day for their work with our children and for developing the next generation of leaders.”

In the Chathams, you can help celebrate local teachers who make a difference in our children's lives by sending your story about your favorite teacher to Chatham Patch Local Editor Laura Silvius at laura.silvius@patch.com. You can also tell us in the comments OR upload a photo with caption to this story.

In addition to Patch, the New Jersey Department of Education is also looking for stories of outstanding teachers:

  • Teacher Memory: This is a new feature of the state’s website where New Jersey residents can submit a memory of their favorite teacher, either past or present. These memories will be reflected on the Department’s website to demonstrate the important contribution that teachers make in each of our lives, even many years later.http://education.state.nj.us/feature/
  • Teacher Spotlight: Each month, the Department will feature a different outstanding New Jersey teacher to recognize and reward their contribution in the classroom. The first teacher to be featured in this series is New Jersey Teacher of the Year – Jeanne DelColle.http://education.state.nj.us/feature/spotlight/12/05.php

A great teacher can change the course of many lives. Tell us about a teacher who changed your life or those of your children.

Two fabulous teachers who have really made a difference for my 4 yr. old son are Mrs. Deditch and Mrs. Thatcher of St. Patrick's Preschool. They are truly dedicated and understanding with the children, and my son has really thrived there. He has been in their classroom for PreK-3 and PreK-4 and enjoys all the activities that they present to the kids each day. They take the time to tell you how your child is doing and what his/her strengths are and where they need a little work (and they will work on whatever your child is struggling with individually, too). First rate teachers, and exceptional and kind!

The # 1 teacher that I find worth mentioning would have to be Mrs. Boznanski, the kindergarten teacher at St. Patrick's School. She is an exceptional teacher, always going above and beyond to make kindergarten special for each and every child in her class. Mrs. B made such a difference in my daughter's education, and I will never forget that. She is dedicated, extremely knowledgeable, funny, and warm-hearted. I wish there was a Mrs. B for every grade!!

Two of my favorite teachers at Southern Blvd. School are the gym teachers Mr. Stevens and Mr. Dalton. My son is a quiet child and not a natural athlete. Yet he is always very enthusiastic about gym class and tells me in great detail the fun things they do there. If you think about it, this is quite amazing. Thank you Mr. Stevens and Mr. Dalton.

Oh Boy!! This is like asking me to pick my favorite son! We have many favorites in our three years at St. Patrick's School. First, in Kindergarten, the wonderful Mrs. Pridham sparked my son's interest in handwriting and penmanship, and she was instrumental in helping him acclimate to his new school! That same year, he had the beloved Miss D'Agostino, the Reading Center teacher. She knew the secret to working with him during reading time! I knew from the first conversation I had with her, that she had great insights, and how blessed he was to have for reading for K and 1st. In first grade, he was blessed with the beloved "Mrs. I." - this amazing woman has teaching in her blood. She refers to all her students as her children and she truly loves them all as her own. When my son would say "I love you Mrs. I", she would say it right back to him...he still hugs her when he sees her, as do I! Last but certainly not least, is my son's 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Corbitt. She has the most amazing and calm presence and has helped him to further his development in all areas. She is kind, patient and has created a fun and educational classroom. If you ask my son what he loves about her, he'd say "everything.. and she taught me how to write in cursive". At St. Pat's, we are blessed with many great teachers-they live and teach with their faith which provides for a loving, nurturing and compassionate place for our children, with excellent academics, athletics & enrichment programs!

since I ran out of room, I needed to start a new comment! We have a very special Spanish teacher, our beloved Signora Cadavid. My son has had Spanish twice a week since he started at St. Pat's and she truly imparts on each child a love of the language, fun learning activities and great Spanish art projects. We love our beautiful Signora!!
