Twp. Committee Delays Choosing New Member
Special meeting to be held Wednesday, June 6.
The Chatham Township Committee came out of executive session Thursday with the announcement they would not name a new member to fill Kevin Tubbs' empty seat.
"We will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, June 6," Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said when the committee opened the meeting to the public.
The committee interviewed the three candidates—Karen Swartz, Laura Ali Nonnenmacher and Joseph Contorno—in private session Thursday for about 90 minutes.
Two of the candidates, Contorno and Nonnenmacher, appear on the GOP ballot for the June primary election this year. Both filed to run for a full term on the committee, though Contorno previously announced he would not campaign or seek the full term.
The date of the special meeting, the deadline for the committee to choose a candidate, is the day after the 2012 primary election
Nonnenmacher and Contorno also both sit on the Chatham Township Republican Committee.
Hagner and other members of the committee did not specify why they declined to take action. In an email to Chatham Patch Wednesday, she said she hoped the committee would decide on a candidate.
Tubbs, a former mayor and twice-elected committee member, submitted a letter of resignation to Mayor Nicole Hagner on Friday, May 4. The resignation was effective Tuesday, May 8.
Tubbs' resignation was expected. The committee member announced on April 12 that he would likely resign from the township committee, as his family planned to move out of state. On March 22, he said he would not seek re-election.
The Chatham Township Republican Committee met Monday and chose Swartz, Nonnenmacher and Contorno as their nominees to fill Tubbs' seat.
According to Township Attorney Carl Woodward, the Republican Committee has 15 days after a resignation to choose three nominees to fill the seat. The Chatham Township Committee must select one of those nominees no more than 30 days after the vacany occurs.
