Two Borough Polling Locations Still Lack Power

Officials hope outages will be restored at Milton and Washington schools by Tuesday.

Chatham Borough Clerk Susan Caljean said most borough residents will be able to vote as usual Tuesday.

"Hopefully we will get power to Milton Avenue School and Washington Avenue School before Tuesday," Caljean said via email to Chatham Patch. "Other than that we are good to go."

Districts 1 and 3 vote at Milton Avenue, and districts 5 and 7 vote at Washington Avenue.

District 2 votes at the Chatham Borough Fire Department. Districts 4 and 9 vote at the Chatham United Methodist Church. Districts 6 and 9 vote at ECLC/Lum Avenue School.

Chatham residents can find their district number printed on a label on their sample ballot.

Caljean did not immediately respond to an email asking whether there was a contingency plan in place in case the two schools do not have power restored by Tuesday.

A Honeywell alert went out to parents within the School District of the Chathams saying the district will make a decision on whether to open schools next week early Sunday morning depending on the availability of gasoline to residents and the safety of staff and students to get to school.

JCP&L says that only 400 or so customers in Chatham Borough will be back by the end of the weekend and about 3,500 will be restored in the Township during the same time. I understand that there are more customers in Township and that they need to get their power on as well, but why such a disparity? Seems like the Borough is not getting the appropriate attention. Where are the Borough officials and the Mayor on all this? Have they issued any statements about progress in the Borough of restoration. What are the issues that will prevent more homes from being turned on this weekend in the Borough?

Let's look at the numbers a slightly different way: approx 23% of current Boro outages and approx 95% of current Twsp outages restored by end of weekend...and same points apply: Where is Bruce Harris? And where is info on the issues causing this disparity?

Seems that borough numbers going up...just check JCP&L. Sigh...my street is always the last to get power. How are we supposd to go to school if we cannot do our homework or go on the Internet...I have been out since Monday night, and know people who lost power later than me and have power now. The unfairness of chatham.

Bruce Harris has been missing, have not received a single piece of communication from him. I have received constant alerts fromMadison, Chatham Township, Summit, but nothing or some long pdf links from the borough which are redic to receive when folks don't have electricity/internet to open. disappointed with the mayor, trying to avoid responsibility

EXACTLY and what did people do to Vaughan? Crucified him. Where are all those big mouths now? What do they have to say about Mayor Harris who appears to be in hiding from the residents?

While its important that the power is restored to these two polling locations before Tuesday, did anyone notice that these two locations are public schools....how about some focus on whether the power will be restored so that these K-3 schools can open on Monday! Where are the priorities?

We appreciate the cooperation, patience and understanding shown by our
residents during this unprecedented emergency. It speaks well of our Borough. Many residents have inquired about the gasoline shortage situation; and, more specifically, why the Shell Station at the corner of Minton and Main is selectively filling the gasoline tanks of
certain vehicles.
Under the Mayor's Emergency Declaration issued 10/29/12, we needed to make sure that the following emergency vehicles could be fueled during the
emergency: JCP&L Utility Trucks, Out-of-State Utility Trucks, Vehicles of DPW employees so they could get to and from work, Vehicles of essential personnel  and 1st responders so they could, also, get to and from work.
Emergency Squad Members.

The owner of the Shell Station at Minton and Main volunteered to fuel only emergency services vehicles at a financial loss to him.  We sincerely regret that we are unable to open the gasoline station to a wider audience. However, we must ensure that emergency crews, especially JCP&L, Out-Of-State utility crews and tree services can continue with their work. If they
were to run out of fuel during this emergency, the restoration of power would be that much more delayed. Emergency services are doing everything possible to restore power to those who have been out

The borough's communication after the storm has been poor. Today is the first day they are posting anything substantial in the way of information, and that is 5 days after the event. As others have pointed out, other towns have been doing much better. That and the "one step forward' two steps back" situation on the power outages,ie power outages in the borough have been increasing not decreasing, seems to indicate that our borough leaders are simply not on top of the situation, ie they are not doing the job we elected them to do.

Couldn't agree more, let's vote them all out of office, esp Bruce Harris. Nobody is on top of this and nobody is giving us information. It's a joke and the punch line is to vote them out.

Chatham Boro Government gets an F in response to Sandy:

Have they not heard of Nixle....? Madison PD flows important info to its citizens hourly:
Where to go, safety info, areas closed, areas open, gas stations, school info, voting info....where is the Chatham Boro response.....NONE. Elected officials had a responsibility to at least communicate with its residents during this crisis. This is the third major power outage in 2 years....where is the protocol? Why is Summit PD Nixel more helpful then Chatham Boro...? Chatham PD not on the system....HELLO, In a power outage texting is the only way to communicate. Chatham Boro PD too busy guarding closed gas stations or parking decoy cars about town. Not like they cant patrol dark streets and neighborhoods.
Where is Mayor Harris.
I have nixle from LBI thats more helpful.

I subscribed to NJALERT, as suggested by the Star Ledger prior to the storm. I entered my 07928 zip and have received regular updates ( at least 4 dozen) from Summit, Madison, and a few from Chatham Twp., but Chatham Boro, my home, had not posted a word. Has the Boro not joined the network, which conveniently sends texts regarding power being restored to certain streets, shelters, places to get warm or recharge, etc.? I am more than disgruntled by the lack of info from our local government. And that quasi apology from C Nauta is a bit late, don't you think?

You can send a text to 40404 and enter the words: follow chathamborough. they don't text much, mostly pdfs that are impossible to read on my blackberry..maybe iphones are better. They have nothing useful to say as far as I can see. Nixle is a good site to register with for constant updates but no, Chatham Boro does not subscribe to it. I get news about Madison and the Twsp and that's it.

The Twsp is doing better than you might think. Their Nixle texted out that 75% will be restored tonight and 93% by midnight Sunday. The Office of Emergency Management is headed by Chief John Paton. No email address listed for him on the site.

I think those numbers may be wrong. I think they actually refer more to the BORO. I think the BORO is at 75% not the TWP. See this link
I think the 75% and 93% figures for the TWP are badly in error. I think I've got the error figured out so let me walk you through it:

Right, that means 25% of the Boro is out of power, then the rest of the columns show that (0) zero were restored today, 9% restored tomorrow and 18% restored Sunday..for a total of 27% restored? BUT when you look at the other numbers..there are 920 without power and only 249 of those to be restored by Sunday...I'm no math whiz, but those don't jive, right?

November 3, 2012From the Chatham Borough Mayor and Council Dear Resident: Those of us without power all have the same question – “When is power going to be restored to my home?”  Many of you have seen the utility crews in town and have had your power restored – and many of you (like several of us) remain without power.   The official word from JCP&L is that it expects to have power restored to almost everyone by Wednesday.  As we get more information, we’ll let you know.  In the interim, we have established warming and recharging centers.  For more information on the centers and other storm related information, please see the Borough web site at
www.chathamborough.org. The current power situationJCP&L and out-of-state utility crews have been working in the Borough the past few days.  (We have been feeding the crews so that they can spend more time working and less time finding food.)  Some of the crews were moved today to other towns that had not yet seen any utility personnel, but we were able to get JCP&L to get crews working in town again today.
As many of you know, most of the downtown area did not lose power, along with a few other areas. At the present time

At the present time, power has been restored to much of the east end of the Borough and the Lafayette section.  Most of the Manor section (generally the area north of Main St. and west of N. Passaic) remains without power, along with portions of Garden Avenue, Ellers Drive and the adjacent streets, portions of the area bounded by Watchung Avenue, Edgehill Avenue, Lafayette Avenue and Longwood Avenue, River Rd. and the adjacent streets,  Red Rd., Fuller Avenue, Dempster Rd., Pihlman Place, Bridge St., Overlook Road and portions of Hillside Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, Orchard Rd., Chatham St., Maple St., and Edgehill Avenue.  Because the situation is fluid, and JCP&L does not provide precise information, this is based on our own field surveys taken earlier today.
Utility crews will be returning to the Borough on Sunday.  Two areas of focus will be restoring power to the Washington Avenue School and Milton Avenue School and adjacent areas in preparation for the reopening of the schools and for Tuesday’s elections. Schools
As most of you know, the School District has indicated it will decide Sunday evening whether to have school on Monday. TransportationThe Governor’s office has indicated that the Department of Transportation will provide detailed information on transit options on Sunday. No time for the restoration of rail service has been announced yet.  Among other sources,
www.511nj.org will have updated information.

Halloween Trick-or-TreatingThe Governor has postponed trick-or-treating to Monday, November 5th.  However, the Borough’s emergency management team intends to determine on Sunday whether it feels it will be safe for children to be doing this given the debris and downed wires.
Brush Clean-upThe Department of Public Works will start a brush clean-up on Monday, November 5th.  Please see the Borough web site for more information, including guidelines regarding what is and is not acceptable.
Throughout the week we have been posting updated information on the Borough web site.  We encourage you to sign up to receive e-mail notification of new postings.  In addition, we encourage you to follow the Borough on Twitter to be notified of updates.  Instructions are on the web site.In the past few days, numerous downed trees have been cleared and blocked roads have been re-opened.  Our Department of Public Works crew has been working throughout the weekend.   Our Police, Fire Department and Emergency Squad have been responding to emergencies and keeping us safe.  Although we have a way to go before we are back to normal, I and the members of the Borough Council have seen countless examples of volunteering and neighbors helping neighbors as we work through this crisis – the community spirit that makes Chatham Borough the special community that it is.
We’re all in this together, and together we’ll make it through.Bruce A. HarrisMayor
