Potentially Rabid Fox Killed By Borough Police
Police, who said the animal was acting strangely, killed the fox on Monday.
Police said they killed a second potentially rabid fox in the borough on Monday after it was observed exhibiting strange behavior.
Chatham Borough Police Detective/Sgt. Michael Bochniak said the fox was killed on Red Road between Hillside Avenue and Fairmount Avenue on Monday morning.
He said the fox had been chewing on itself and had generally been acting in an odd manner.
"It wasn't able to get away from the officers, and the officers had to euthanize it," Bochniak said.
The fox did not bite anyone.
The killing came after animal control officials and police twice observed a fox acting strangely on Thursday. That fox was spotted on River Road by the New Jersey Transit overpass and by Fairmount Cemetery.
That fox was not captured by police.
Bochniak said the remains of the fox that was killed Monday are being taken to Trenton for rabies tests.
A fox that bit two people in the borough on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day was shot by borough police on Christmas Day. Tests showed that it had rabies.
If people see animals exhibiting strange behavior, police said, they should report the matter to borough police at 973-635-8000.
