After 38 years, Chatham High School will have a new ice hockey coach.
The Board of Education approved Frank Gilberti as the new head coach of the team by a vote of 7-0 with one abstention. Gilberti has served as the assistant coach for several years.
Cohen retired on Dec. 31, 2011 because of a board policy that did not allow the athletic director to coach a sports team. Cohen served as athletic director at Chahtam High since 1997.
The board approved Cohen as the hockey coach for the 2011-12 season. This year, Board Member Rich Connors said, the board opted to interview several candidates, including Cohen, for the position of head coach.
Cohen "applied for the position [of hockey coach], and went through the whole interview process," Connors said, but "the administration decided to go with Gilberti."
The ice hockey team won their first Public B state championship in 2011 with Cohen and Gilberti as head and assistant coach.

Um, perhaps it was because Coach Cohen is a Charter Member of the NJ HS Hockey Hall of Fame, and one of the All-Time Great Coaches in NJ hockey history, because he has connections and friends far and wide in the hockey world? Because he brought the tiny little CTHS program up to the level of major NJ hockey factory programs? Because he was a major contributor in bringing all of Chatham Athletics up to competitive levels across the board?

How long is too long? That's a question all of us will face one day. When the coach is no longer able to meet the vigorous physical demands of the job, when he can no longer 'take the ice' with his players, then perhaps it's time. Having watched the Cougars over the past two seasons it was quite obvious that this young coach was much more than an able bodied assistant. During the games, the players looked to him for strategy and direction. Coach Cohen was still in charge, but functioned more as a General Manager than a Head Coach. Coach Gilberti has waited his turn, he has been a sucessful high school head coach before, and I'm sure given the quality of this program, he will be again. In retrospect, Coach Cohen should have left after reaching the pinnacle of NJ Hockey. He would have went out on top as a legend in NJ high school hockey. Instead, he wanted one more year, then one more after that. Who knows how long that would have gone on? The board acted rationally, objectively and in the best interest of the school district and the program.

The fact that you even posted this question is absurd. This is possibly the worst news reporting website ever constructed. The writing is literally god awful, consistantly filled with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, not to mention the article choices are in poor taste and at times classless.

This is a no brainer and a 7-0 Vote proves that. I've played for Coach Gilberti and he is exactly what the program needs. He is knowledgeable, understanding, passionate and most of all he cares about ALL of his players. All younger players that aren't in high school yet should 100% attend CHS. Coach Gilberti has a vision and ALL the players who reside in Chatham are going to want to be a part of it. I am grateful for all that he has done for me and continues to do for me. Best of luck. Success is imminent.

Absolutely no question. The right choice was made and it's pretty clear that Frank Gilberti has been the one running the show the last few years while Cohen took the credit for everything. Thank you BOE for making this call and also for doing us all a favor by not having to see that god awful denim shirt anymore!

HC has driven away elite players for years with his boy scout mentality. Hopefully our players and parents will now realize that we have a hockey coach who will teach our kids how to win on and off the ice. There have been multiple players who have elected to go the perochial route to play their HS hockey becuase they simply did not want to play for this putz. For the last 10 years, players and parents a like have wanted this to happen. Unfortunately, the fear was that anyone who spoke up against HC would face his consequences. He was the coach/AD for years and had no one to answer to. He knew he had it good and decided to play the political game instead of coaching hockey and teaching the game properly. Good riddance. Great Hire. Let's go Chatham.

You people are PATHETIC! Whether or not Coach Cohen should have retired, been rehired, or fired was not our decision to make nor should it be discussed/polled on this forum where you post extremely negative comments and hide behind your user names. I can only hope that all of you work in a job for 30+ years to then be let go and then subsequently bashed on a web site. Did any of you EVER think of how Coach Cohen would feel reading such comments - or do you even ever care about how your words can hurt another person. Shame on all of you! So much for Chatham being comprised of well educated people who know how to behave because all of you have proven how uncaring you truly are!

Wendy, unfortunately its clear that these people only care about themselves and their selfish entitlement mentality of state championships and athletic scholarships for their kids. The single minded pursuit of $$$ has blinded them to anything else besides winning and financial reward. Why should they care about the dignity of a Hall of Fame coach and LEGEND who has his heart, soul and personal sacrifice into a program and school system for 38 years? There couldn't be a better example of how Chatham has changed in 38 years.

Coach Cohen did a lot for Chatham hockey. I really wish him well. He had a great career, but Coach Gilberti is one of the best young coaches in the state. Any knowledgeable hockey person saw that Coach Gilberti handled the tactical part of the game the last few years, including in the State Championship season. Chatham is in a great place for the future with Gilberti as the Head Coach.

Actually what's been stated are facts, Wendy. This is a poll and discussion board of people's opinions which are pretty one sided - not sure why you take it so personally???? And if you really knew Chatham, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be defending Coach Cohen as he's a pretty vindictive fellow - but seems he's pulled the wool over your eyes as well. That's what's pathetic.

Wendy is, like me, only reacting to the vitriole, hate speech and lack of class shown toward Coach Cohen. I think almost everyone accepts and understands the Board decision to bring in a younger, highly regarded replacement at this time. Many of us are offended by the volume and tone toward a man many of us know, who brought nothing but 110% loyalty and love toward CTHS and CHS for the last 38 years of his life. Chatham is a much different place than it was when Coach Cohen came to the Township in 1973, and its not for the better.

"Deal with it" thanks for making my point even more valid - Chathamites have no manners. Did you read ANYWHERE in my comment that I defended or took this issue personally? I don't...that wasn't my point at all! If you read my comment I said that it wasn't our decision to make and that I find it pathetic that all of you feel the need to berate another individual in a public forum and hide behind your screen name like "deal with it" . So, thanks for making a negative comment about Coach Cohen - guess, I will stick with my original statement.

Agree 100% about the manners and class of the Cohen haters from Chatham. Thats the only issue at this point. Coach Cohen's historical legacy in NJ is forever, and his countless contributions to NJ HS hockey will never be taken away by a group of classless, parents with an entitlement problem. Its a fair decision to replace an older coach with a newer coach. But never, ever have I see such a bush league send-off for an All-Time Great. And Harvey Cohen is certainly that in the annals of NJ Hockey. Coach Cohen deserves much better than the Chatham parents of 2012.

"Wendy" - you are shaming others for expressing their thoughts on the article that was written - clearly you don't know what a discussion board is. No one is berrating him - this perception is out there for a reason and if you feel so bad for him maybe you should stop and think as to why so many people feel this way. Since you are insinuating that "Chathamites" aren't well educated and calling them pathetic I can only read this as "Wendy Michaels" taking these opinions pretty personally. I'm guessing you aren't from Chatham since you are the one shaming people here for expressing their opinions based on TRUE FACTS & EXPERIENCES we have had with this man. Perhaps you should educate yourself before you talk about things you know nothing about and are seeing from afar. This is about athletes and hockey - if you want to talk about feelings go watch Lifetime.

Deal with It is apparently not reading my comments, or Wendy's for that matter. When you state something so incredulous as "no one is berating him", you certainly aren't exhibiting intelligence or reading comprehension. "No one is berating him"? Oh really? Would you like us to prepare a summary of the personal, vile, nasty comments directed at Coach Cohen contained on this very forum? Apparently your browser isn't picking up such innocuous comments such as "that putz" from some of your fellow upstanding, upscale and highly educated Chathamites. Coach Cohen remains a NJ HS Hockey Hall of Fame, Charter Member. God, I guess you can only feel pity for these viscious, classless parents living vicariously through their kids and imagining CHS as the Don Bosco of HS Hockey! Their values and priorities are quite sick.

Well I'm not hiding my name! Everyone knows me Wendy. And I read your post & I understand you were worried about Harveys feelings, now I want to ask you Wendy, was Harvey worried about coach Gilbertis feelings when he did not mention him at all after the state championship & after coach of the year? Especially when it was Gilbertis new style of coaching and his determination that helped the boys get that far that year. If this Harvey was such a stand up guy he would've had Gilberti next to him for every honerable mention after that season!
