Update: Fox in Photo Left Scene Before Police Arrived

The fox was reportedly seen at about 1:45 p.m.

UPDATE: 9:39 a.m. A fox spotted in the parking lot of the Town Square shops in the borough Thursday afternoon at about 1:45 p.m. left the scene before police arrived.

Chatham Borough Police Detective/Sgt. Michael Bochniak said the fox was gone by the time police made their way to the scene. No other police action was taken with regard to the animal.

A photo obtained by Chatham Patch documents the fox's presence in the parking lot off of Roosevelt Avenue. In the photo, at right, the fox appears as a small brown animal in the parking lot's center.

There has been considerable anxiety in the Chatham community since a rabid fox bit two people over Christmas in December. Borough police shot and killed that fox, and then shot another fox in January after it had been behaving strangely. Tests eventually showed that the second fox had not been rabid.

If that's a fox there does seem to be something wrong with it, in the sense that it lacks the tail, posture, and stealthiness that generally characterize a fox, even in a suburban environment. Does anybody else think this looks more like a small coyote?
