Over 1,000 Still Without Power in Township
All substations that service the township are functional again, but residents are still without power as a winter storm hits the area.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said Wednesday several sections of town had their power restored, including:
- Wickham Woods
- Southern Boulevard to Fairmount Avenue
- All of Fairmount Avenue
- Shunpike Road to Ferndale Road
- Rolling Hill neighborhood
- Buttonwood Lane
- Crestwood Drive
"Line crews have been working all day to get poles set on and around Snake Hill to restore power to the condo complexes on River Road. This is the largest section of town that is still out," Hagner said in a statement Wednesday.
"I have no concrete estimate from JCP&L on when damage to this area will be fully repaired, but word from the crew on the ground indicates that, weather dependent, they [could] complete the job by Thursday," Hagner said.
According to the outage map at the First Energy website, 1,438 customers in Chatham Township are still without power as of 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Township residents whose power has not yet been restored are asked to contact JCP&L at (888) 544-4877.
Hagner said the township's Department of Public Works is unable to clear residential storm debris. Fees for dumping debris at the Tanglewood mulch facility are being waived in the wake of Tropical Storm Sandy, including fees usually given to contractors hired by private residents.
The Chatham Township Municipal Building is currently serving as a warming and charging station open 24 hours a day. The Madison Area YMCA is also open to residents.
Hagner asked residents to check on any neighbors with special needs as the nor'easter hits the area.
Township residents are also able to take chartered buses from the Madison and Chatham train stations to New York City. Buses leave at 6, 7 and 7:30 a.m. and cost $20 roundtrip.
To help citizens through the nor'easter, the township established a drop-off point for firewood next to the pool at Sutton Woods. The wood is free to pick-up and all donations are appreciated. Anyone who requires a firewood delivery can call (908) 313-8949.

Shunpike to Noe still has no power including Lenape, RobinHood etc. Not sure why it says Shunpike to Ferndale back. Also, several neighbors told by JCP&L that shunpike substation still broken. No crews to fix down wires on Shunpike and Edgewood yet.

I signed up for nixle..Madison is almost at full power yet they send 3x as many alerts as Chatham does...

Does Chatham Patch get their facts from Lalaland or the township's mayor? Wait I forgot both are imaginary. Police are needed in the intersection of Shunpike and Noe. People have no regard for the FOUR WAY stop sign. It's only a matter of time before someone has a fatal accident.

Floral Street is still down. In the last three storms, Floral Street has been in the last 10% still offline. I'm not sure how that is possible considering that each time ONE tree was to blame and ONE set of wires at ONE poll had to be fixed -- for EACH storm. And of course we are just one block from the high school. Every street around us has power. When they finally come to fix it, at least the last two times, it took the JCP&L crew about one hour to get a whole street up. But here we sit. Many kids walk Floral Street to the bus. And of course our Mayor doesn't even have us on the list. Nuts. I had to follow Chatham Borough on Twitter to get updates. Chatham Township has done a terrible job with communications and accuracy.

As a resident of School Ave., I agree completely with every single point made here. Floral and School Avenues are major thoroughfares for both kids walking and parents driving to three schools. How is it possible that are we always among the last to get power? The communications from the Borough Mayor Harris are far more informative and they seem to be doing everything possible to facilitate the power company employees' ability to repair the lines, including feeding them so they don't have to search for food.

As aggravating as it is to be without power, it is infinitely more disturbing to be constantly lied to about the progress of a return of power. Nothing has been done on River Road by the condos since the storm. Why are we being told that work is progressing when none is. We will be going into our tenth night and where are our elected officials and accurate and timely information?????

Disaster management, after protecting lives, is primarily a communication battle. We lost the battle in Chatham Township. We lacked adequate resources as a town, for example diesel fuel, generators, distribution capabilities, and too few cross trained employees to cover roles needed in an emergency. We lacked adequate utility crews as trucks and teams were sent, understandably, to more severely hit parts of the state. We lacked information because we were/are unable to get accurate information from the utility companies. I think a neighbor summed it up pretty accurately last night. Just get us information and we will make sensible decisions for ourselves. Leave us in the "dark" and expect frustrations to grow exponentially with time. JCP&L mapped the borough and township (surveying one downed pole on our street at least three times) and developed a detailed response plan - they have been doing this for years. Our township clearly wasn't invited to the table. After last year's storms, I would have thought our readiness would be higher, our coordination with utility companies better, and our response more coordinated and transparent. Please learn the lessons this time around or step aside so others with more crisis management, civic and business experience can step up to the table. If models hadn't predicted Sandy's left turn as early as they did, the loss of life could have been staggering in NJ and NY. Plan for more adverse weather in the future.

The elected folks of the township should realize that they need to do more than just update by shuffling jcp&l updates from the inbox to the website, especially if everyone has realized that those are just baseless. I have been following jcp&l etr pdf report too (http://t.co/sihNbSqi) and its just not accurate if you take into account the township condos. How come the most populated area of the township is not being looked into even upto now? We are past the 7-10 day window thrown at us! and past all the silly updates thrown at us too...

Why are there JCP&L and contractor trucks in chatham township looking like they are doing nothing but sitting in parking lots and wasting gas!!! THEY SHOULD BE WORKING!!!! What did Chatham do to get such horrible service??? So far today in a half hour time frame I found 2 trucks in the Long Hill Chapel parking lot on Shunpike not working and 8 bucket trucks and 1 supervisor pickup truck in the Fairmount CC parking lot, again not doing anything. Walked down to river road @ southern around 11 am this morn. Coming from new providence, it looks like they just cut off the power poles blocking the road yesterday so that the plows could safely plow the roads & allow the service trucks in. Saw a couple bucket trucks out there, but since there are more poles down on river rd towards new providence, I would say it looks like another 2 days or so before they get them all repaired, unless they drop what they are doing to go work somewhere else.....

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T GET ANGRY WITH THE LINEMEN. They only do what they are told and they are upset as well that it can't go faster. Everyone knows what its like to have a boss or management constantly getting in the way of doing your job. Well, this is JCP&L. The lineman are working 16-18hr shifts and many are still going home to a cold, dark home. Vent your anger and frustration the most effective way. First, call JCP&L outage line EVERY morning and report your home address. SOMETIMES, your address will fall off the outage list when they power up a circuit. SECOND, call the town administrator EVERY morning 973-635-4600 after JCP&L. Hold our town government accountable. They know where the crews are. I personally know a few Township residents that have medical machines that need to run to keep them alive and they are still on generators spending hundreds in gas. Count your blessings. There is ALWAYS someone worse off than you.

I called JCP&L 2 days ago to see if my street (near CHS) was on the list. I was really nice to the call center operator and 2 hours later the lights were on. Don't know if that helped but who knows!! Also, don't forget the linemen are union and were probably on the mandatory break (as to why they were at Fairmount CC). Things would go alot faster if the non-union workers from right-to-work states weren't told to go home after they made the trip here!!!!!

I call jcp&l every morning then the township office and then the mayor an email. All they tell me is the dont know anything. How can this be after 11 days without power they don't know anything. And why is the mayor updating the township website with tales that aren't true. I also visited the are this morning before 10 am and there was no one there and everything was still the same. What is going on here. I feel like I live in a third world country. How many more freezing nights do we have to spend. Many of us there don't have fireplaces so there is no way to keep warm. Many also have pets that we can't leave in a freezing house overnight. I am ready for a nervous breakdown. Why can't we get honest answers? Why are they not working on our power lines?
