Trio Leads Chatham to 2nd Straight State Title

Kology, Gorham and Harrigan power Cougars to Public B girls swimming championship.

The Chatham High School girls swim team, led by Regan Kology, Jessica Gorham and Julia Harrigan, repeated as Public B state champions as the Cougars easily defeated Haddonfield Township on Sunday at the TCNJ in Ewing.

The Cougars dominated the pool, winning 9 of 11 events. The victory capped a perfect 17-0 season, their second consecutive undefeated season and second consecutive state title.

Chatham 17-0; Haddonfield 13-3.

IN SHORT

After four events, the meet was tied at 31 with the teams splitting the first four events. But Chatham dominated the next three events (100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle) outscoring its opponent 35-13 to take an insurmountable lead.

Kara Miller Radest started the onslaught, winning the butterfly with teammates Katie Bucher and Taryn McLaughlin finishing 3-4. Harrigan, Shayna McLaughlin and Rachel Tortorella repeated the 1-3-4 finish for the Cougars in the 100 freestyle. In the 500 freestyle, Kology, Jenni Allocco and Alyssa Raiola went 1-2-3 to put the meet out of reach and give the Cougars their second consecutive state title.

COUGARS OF THE MEET

Regan Kology—The sophomore won two individual events (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and swam legs on two winning relays (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle)

Jessica Gorham—The sophomore won two individual events (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and swam legs on two winning relays (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle)

Julia Harrington—The senior won the 100 freestyle and swam legs on two winning relays (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle)

COACH'S TAKE

“The girls did an awesome job. We knew they would do well in the medley relay but we came right back sweeping the 200 free. We’ve become a back-end team so when it was tied [after 4 events] we expected to do well”—first-year head coach Karen Gaba
