Former Chatham Resident Returns Home for Local Book Signing

Author, dancer and fashion model held a book signing Friday afternoon at Jabberwocky for her new children's book.

Agatha Relota, a former Chatham resident, returned home to sign copies of her new children’s book “Carla and Leo’s World of Dance” at Jabberwocky Friday afternoon.

The book, released this month, introduces children to the largely unfamiliar world of ballroom dancing.

At 4 years old, Relota began her dancing career in Chatham at Dance Innovations, and began to ballroom dance competitively at 17. Inspired by her nieces, who wanted to learn how to cha-cha like their aunt, Relota decided to write a children’s book teaching the steps and timing of ballroom dancing.

“I decided to write a story to introduce children to ballroom dancing, the history, the culture, the music. To get kids interested and teach them it is something modern. They can learn geography, history, music, everything through the book,” Relota said.

“Carla and Leo’s World of Dance” follows two best friends, Carla and Leo, as they happen upon a magical dance studio after school. They learn dances from around the world, such as the waltz, foxtrot, salsa and tango.

With more than 50 colorful illustrations enhancing the storyline, Relota’s book is unique and attractive to young adults. “The illustrations were done by Thierry Perez, who is a famous fashion illustrator. We have done it so it’s more of a pop art book where kids can see what you can actually do with art. It’s a very vibrant and colorful book,” Relota said during her book signing.

In addition to the illustrations by Perez, actress Jessica Alba wrote the forward to “Carla and Leo’s World of Dance.” During Relota’s west coast launch party, Alba said, “Education, and especially education focusing on the arts, is extremely important to me. This book teaches children not only about dance but also about music, culture, and friendship. I was thrilled to lend my name and support to this book."

“Carla and Leo’s World of Dance” is available at Jabberwocky and wherever books are sold. Keep a look out for another “Carla and Leo” book in the future because according to Relota, “Carla and Leo and definitely going to go and discover other adventures.”
