National Night Out Brings Community Together
Police used the national evening of crime and neighborhood safety awareness to educate residents about the services they provide.
Residents of Chatham Township gathered at five block parties to celebrate the 29th annual National Night Out.
Mayor Nicole Hagner, Deputy Mayor Robert Gallop and Committee Member Kathy Abbott joined the Chatham Township Police Department and Chatham Emergency Squad to tour the block parties and let residents get to know their emergency responders.
Residents asked police and officials about the new location of the Chatham Township gazebo and about traffic and pedestrian safety.
Police also used the evening to give out safety tips and discuss the township's new community policing program. Residents will notice an increase in police presence in their neighborhoods once the program starts later this year.
Other services police offer are house checks while residents are on vacation, and a daily telephone check-in for senior citizens.
