Cops: Cyclist Ran Stop Sign, Struck By Car

Police issued a summons to the cyclist.

A 21-year-old Chatham bicyclist ignored a stop sign and was struck by a vehicle last week at the intersection of Floral Street and School Avenue, Chatham Township Police said.

Shane Prebenda, 21, received a summons after going through a stop sign on School Avenue Sunday, July 15 at about 1:15 p.m., police said.

After going through the stop sign, Prebenda was struck by a car driven by Margaret Blackwood, of Chatham Township, who was traveling eastbound on Floral Street, according to police.

Prebenda told police he saw the stop sign and failed to stop, and was issued a summons by the investigating officer, police said.

Prebenda was also transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to police.

A similar accident, where a cyclist failed to stop at the same intersection, occurred in May 2011.

I'd be happy if people driving CARS in Chatham observed stop signs.

I see bicyclists almost daily on N. Passaic Avenue. Some are courteous, others not so much. If you want to be treated as an equal, behave like one. That is all.

David , try riding a bike on these roads. Often there is glass, rocks, road kill, nails on the shoulder and sides of the roads. Cars need to learn to share the road with cyclists and understand why we often do not ride on the shoulder. Oh yeah, how about slowing down and obeying they speed limit as well.
