UPDATED: Nearly 60% of Township Still in the Dark
Despite police-issued alert indicating most power had been restored Saturday night, nearly 3,000 township customers remain out, JCP&L map shows.
Nearly 60 percent of Chatham Township JCP&L customers remained without power Sunday morning, the utility company's outage map indicated.
However, a Nixle alert released Saturday night by the Chatham Township Police said 75 percent of the township was expected to be restored by Saturday night and more than 90 percent was expected to have power by midnight Sunday.
Township Police issued another alert Sunday morning, saying utility crews were working to repair the outages.
"Crews are trying to make significant repairs to severely damaged police and transmission lines in the Great Swamp in an effort to restore township power," the alert said. "They are doing everything possible to try an expedite this repair."
According to JCP&L's outage map, 2,552 of the township's 4,428 customers remained without power as of 11 a.m. Sunday.
About 23 percent of Chatham Borough's JCP&L customers remained in the dark Sunday morning with 846 outages still not restored. However, the outages declined from 1,477 as of 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

I guess River Road is not included in this figure? Don't forget about us JCP&L like you did last year. I just drove thru the township and it seems like a whole lot more than 75% is still dark. Don't know where these numbers in this article were pulled from. JCP&L obviously must be confused.

Is it possible that jcp&l is confusing the boro and the township? I saw a link recently where it seemed like the 75% figure applied to the township and the boro was at like 31%

John D and all-
My concern is that JCP&L either knows what the situation (and outlook) are and refuses to level with us, or doesn't know what the situation is and is reporting any old number. Either way we are served by knaves or fools. Sounds like other choices this Election Day week. We cannot do anything right now, but remember your anger after the cleanup and let's be sure to let the Public Utilities Commission and our elected officials know what needs to be done. Transparency and honesty are top of the list. Meanwhile, hang in there and help each other.

Wow ! Chatham Twp. says we'll all have power tomorrow. Yet the estimate says that only 5% will be restored tomorrow, and 8% by Monday. Seems about right. The Road Dept. is nowhere to be seen. But I did see them drinking coffee by Colony Pool. And the cops, yeah, I saw them move a branch out of the road Tuesday AM. And than they sped away in their new Charger wasting the taxpayers money. I also saw them speeding around Corpus Christi church acting like children in the same car a few weeks agio. Glad we can waste our hard-earned money on these idiots. And there new phone system with the county is confusing and useless. They are all clueless. And they couldn't care less about us. Oh, and BTW, they aren't going to pick up any of the debris you place near the street. Have you seen a barracade or an orange cone around any of the obstacles in the Township ? Every other town I've been through has the road dept. visible and there are cones and barracades everywhere.

According to the JCPL report mentioned in this article only 8% of those in Chatham Township that were affected will be restored by Monday, so this article is very confusing: https://www.firstenergycorp.com/content/dam/newsroom/files/Town_ETR_Report.pdf

I think the 75% and 93% figures for the TWP are badly in error. I think I've got the error figured out so let me walk you through it:
Go to this link
https://www.firstenergycorp.com/content/dam/newsroom/files/Town_ETR_Report.pdf
You'll see that as of this morning 25% of the BORO was out (I.e. 75% had power) and 68% of the TWP was out (I.e. 32% had power). So the TWP police had it totally backwards. Next you'll see that over the next 3 days (11/3, 11/4 and 11/5) 0%, 9% and 18% respectively of the BORO outages were estimated to be restored. That means that by the end of this 3 day period 27% (=0+ 9+ 18) of the BORO OUTAGES were supposed to be restored. That would still leave 73% of the 25% of people out which is 18.25%- ie 81.75% of the BORO is expected to have power by the nd of Monday 11/5. I think someone added the 75 and 18 figures together (mistakenly) and got 93%. So looks like they did the wrong math for the wrong town, so many errors it's hard to believe it!

You will not find any honest answers here so please don't bother asking. These so-called emergency workers are making a ton of overtime during this crisis and, for them to actually solve the problem, it would mean that they to go home early with less money in their pockets than they would if they prolong the problem at our expense. Can you blame them? Christmas is around the corner and this may be the last catastrophe of the year for them to "earn" some extra money to purchase 50 types of lead-infused plastic Made in China toys to put under the Christmas tree. Would you like an analogy? Is what happening here reminding you of ...say... your friendly neighborhood medical professionals? When was the last time they really helped you to get healthy? I claim what you are witnessing here is no different! We will have to grin and bear it for now; for those of you who want to be vocal and take action, go for it with the mayor, representative, etc. If it helps, find some solace that we are all suffering together however I would rather prefer holding a warm steamy cup of hot chocolate. My heart goes out to the kids, the sick, and the elderly who are suffering because of a lack of electricity, heat, and hot water.

I'm afraid that our older citizens could get very sick because of the lack of power/heat. I don't know. I'm 22 years old and feel like us youth could've cleaned this up a lot quicker than these workers who cut the trees and branches etc. Who knows, maybe I'm just a worry wart. All towns in this area have our personal crews plus out of state assistance here trying to get us up and running. I have seen places unable to get up and running to areas that have been up for 2 days only to have their transformers blow. Everyone needs to be patient during this catastrophic event. While you may think nothing is being done there are dozens of people trying to get things back to normal. Instead of bitching try volunteering to help.

As for the older people, there are shelters and warming stations with food to help care for them. If they choose not to go, that's on them.

November 3, 2012From the Chatham Borough Mayor and Council Dear Resident: Those of us without power all have the same question – “When is power going to be restored to my home?â€Â Many of you have seen the utility crews in town and have had your power restored – and many of you (like several of us) remain without power.  The official word from JCP&L is that it expects to have power restored to almost everyone by Wednesday. As we get more information, we’ll let you know. In the interim, we have established warming and recharging centers. For more information on the centers and other storm related information, please see the Borough web site at
www.chathamborough.org. The current power situationJCP&L and out-of-state utility crews have been working in the Borough the past few days. (We have been feeding the crews so that they can spend more time working and less time finding food.) Some of the crews were moved today to other towns that had not yet seen any utility personnel, but we were able to get JCP&L to get crews working in town again today.
As many of you know, most of the downtown area did not lose power, along with a few other areas.Â

At the present time, power has been restored to much of the east end of the Borough and the Lafayette section. Most of the Manor section (generally the area north of Main St. and west of N. Passaic) remains without power, along with portions of Garden Avenue, Ellers Drive and the adjacent streets, portions of the area bounded by Watchung Avenue, Edgehill Avenue, Lafayette Avenue and Longwood Avenue, River Rd. and the adjacent streets, Red Rd., Fuller Avenue, Dempster Rd., Pihlman Place, Bridge St., Overlook Road and portions of Hillside Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, Orchard Rd., Chatham St., Maple St., and Edgehill Avenue. Because the situation is fluid, and JCP&L does not provide precise information, this is based on our own field surveys taken earlier today.
Utility crews will be returning to the Borough on Sunday. Two areas of focus will be restoring power to the Washington Avenue School and Milton Avenue School and adjacent areas in preparation for the reopening of the schools and for Tuesday’s elections. Schools
As most of you know, the School District has indicated it will decide Sunday evening whether to have school on Monday. TransportationThe Governor’s office has indicated that the Department of Transportation will provide detailed information on transit options on Sunday. No time for the restoration of rail service has been announced yet. Among other sources,

Friends,
Thanks to those people who volunteered today to handle the mulch and recycle center in CB. That allowed our DPW to stay on the roads and cut more trees down. As we need more volunteers, I'll reach out again. Mayor Harris & Mayor Hagner have sent out e-mails/messages over the last 2 days to help guide you were things are at. If you need me to forward again, let me know. Each towns website has many details on the storm.
Power - I cannot guide you on the status in the Twp (please go to their website and/or connect directly with your elected officials) and nor can we make any guarantee to those living in the Borough that those that remain without power will have power shortly. As I said in my earleir e-mails, JCP&L has both a priority list of what needs to get accomplished, and they have massive outages across the region. Everything is fluid and changes on a dime. We have crews in Chatham, we lose crews to other towns. JCP&L has to balance the needs of all towns, not just Chatham. In the Borough, we have been told we will have a crew back in Chatham on Sunday. There are a few key projects JCP&L was working on before they were pulled out of Chatham on Friday. Assuming they stick to their word, there should be a material impact on a
number of areas by end of day tomorrow. Does that mean all houses will be back. No! It's a process. They started out by saying a minimum of 7-10 days. For those still out, use that as the guide. Could pockets of streets

From jim lonergan ctd...
There were discussions about the PATH from the Newark/Jersey City line to 33rd St being up Monday, but we have yet to confirm that. If we get a confirm, we will send something out as I know many of us are trying to plan how to get into NYC Monday.
Â
Schools - The Superintendent is working with the town officials to try and get schools up and running by Monday. Know that they are looking at many alternatives and doing everything they can to get the kids back in school. Right now LAS, CMS, & CHS have power. Southern, Milton, WAS remain without. Sunday activity will dictate what occurs. The BOE will communicate school activity Sunday night via the Honeywell system. Also remember, every decision has its pro's and cons. In crisis like this, both the towns and BOE have to weigh all decisions and they will need to make calls knowing there are two sides to every
decision. Also, it looks highly likely that the kids will have school Thursday and Friday this week (school was supposed to be off). The BOE should know for certain over the next 24-48 hours.
Again, for planning purposes, there is no guarantee but a guide only.
Â
Gas - we are hearing some of the ports/terminals are opening up, yet blockages remain in the supply chain. It "feels"like we may see more activity over the coming week in terms of gas availability. As you probably know by know, NJ state started the odd/even days today and that will remain in effect until the crisis is past us.

Jim lonergan ctd...
We may have some gas available locally shortly. I will follow-up should it occur.
Â
Cable/Internet - The cable issues have been flooding at substations and the need to use generators to keep the systems going. For those with power, many cable customers are now back up. If not, call your cable company (assuming you have a cell phone)
Â
For those that remain without power, we are all aware that the 5-7 day period begins getting really old as many of us experienced last year at this time. While we expect much of Chatham to be back over the next few days, we also know that not every home will be up. Reach out to your friends. Use the resources both towns are offering (warming & charging stations), feel free to keep inquiring in to towns officials and staff. Know that we are all battling to get to 100% completion; don't be afraid to keep letting us know you home remains out, but also realize people are busting their butt to try and get everyone back up and get some level of normalcy back in our lives. And believe it or not, once we get through our challenges here in Chatham, be prepared to be asked to help our neighbors down south who are in dire need of our support for food. clothing, basic supplies etc... You know my wife Mary is already working on that
plan:-)

Could pockets of streets go beyond 10 days, it's possible. There is no way to predict. Believe me when I say both towns are doing everything within their power to
corral JCP&L staff. That being said, if you have power, please reach out to neighbors/friends you know that do not have power and offer to have them come for a dinner, stay in a warm house, offer to do a load of laundry. Anything!!!! These are neighbors and friends. Don't wait for them to ask. They probably won't. Call them, stop over at their house. Anything, but allow them to get warm without having to look for refuge outside of Chatham. Make this Sunday "Neighbor Dinner Day" and have them come to your home to watch a game, sit by the fire, cook a meal, share some beers - anything. Make it happen! Don't just go back to the daily routine now that you have power.
Â
Transit - As we're entering a new week, the JCP&L crew spent much of Thursday eliminating the high risk of poles falling in/around the train station. They completed the project early Friday so from a safety and allowing NJT to stop in Chatham, we are good to go. As for NJT trains, NJT remains uncommitted due to the enormous flooding damage that occurred in Carney and Hoboken. Until they settle that, NJT remains out. There has been talk about possibly resuming by mid-week, but things remain fluid and I would plan accordingly.

JCP&L is doing a really poor job in communicating with their customers. PSE&G sends a email out every morning with a update.
Speaking of doing a poor job in communicating with it's residents is our township leadership. They should be ashamed of themselves. They like to post these little tidbits on their website and then run and hide.
"Chatham Township Residents Responsible for clearing out their own debris."
Really?
Wow that is great news. (yes this is sarcasm) The boro of Chatham has it's power almost fully restored and 92% of the township is still out. The boro of Chatham is going to start picking up debris from it's residents on Monday. Madison has already started. The Township of Chatham said it is the resident's responsibility to take the debris to the Tanglewood site.
Really? Why? To much money? Not in the budget? Well folks like us on a fixed budget don't have a "clear the debris fund" either.
That is why the federal government is offering assistance to states, counties and towns. Maybe our local government doesn't know how to get these funds. I saw an email from the township Mayor Nicole Hagner that she spoke to the president of JCP&L about the power and getting more crews in the area. She said she made this request "very strongly." How about making a "very strong request" for funds to help our township residents with clean up, debris removal, etc. How come other towns nearby can do this for their residents?

Wow! These threads are outrageous, thankfully we still have a home to go to, it is certainly no fun to live like a nomad but I for one, am just so thankful to have amazing friends that are willing to provide a couch and a fireplace. It's amazing what we take for granted.
And for the record, Chatham twp is no better then any other town and the governors and the mayors and the presidents do not control Mother Nature nor does jersey typically get hurricanes with this type of devastation, I'm pretty sure none of us were prepared! If you have a problem with the authority, vote.

Look at this chart for power restoration estimates from NJ State Gov't site. Here is the link below to the official NJ State chart on outages by County and Town and restoration progress. Chatham Township has almost 3000 outages reported and it is projected to see only 240 restored by Nov 5th or 8%. The current communication is awful and misleading. The police reporting needs to jive with the states report and seems totally inaccurate. If they have different info than the state we would all be comforted to know it. Shunpike has tape now around downed wires and broken poles as signals to crews to stop and fix-but where are they???? 8 days no power and no updates that are real. The "breaking news" story reported here by police on the Chatham Patch that we will be fully restored needs updating ASAP!!!!! Please! Many thanks

3 or 4 days before the storm, we were all warned about the severity of Sandy. It was clearly stated that restoration of power would take at least 7 to 10 days. Today is the 6th day; no one should be that surprised or in shock. All things considered, the Borough and Township faired very well and people should look further outside of the towns to understand the real hardship others are enduring.
For those complaining about the police and public works officials, try catching few hours of sleep in your car or the town jail cells all the while your house is in the dark or flooded and your family is without you. Some consideration and compassion is in order.

i don't think people are complaining about the people working hard in the field and certainly we have it better than most. the problem is the miscommunication. telling people most of the power would be back sunday night was clearly inaccurate and dangerous with temperatures going down into the 20's tonight. all any body is asking is for accurate information. what are the areas being targeted? when jcp&l states 120 people should have power by sunday night surely they know what neighborhood that represents. as the temperatures go down this information becomes critical.

No one is suggesting that being without power compares to the situation where a home is destroyed and/or a loved one lost. Simply not comprable and no comparison is being made. The grumblings etc arise from erroneous and ineffective communication. There is no crime in setting forth the complaints and it is unnecessary and pointless to vilify the people who are doing so in response to an extremely erroneous communication precisely on point.

Your neighbor is probably still in shock and hence could not utter a single word including a word of complaint. When you saw him, did he have a glazed look in his eyes? Was he standing still mumbling in an alien tongue? My hypothesis is that he was traumatized when the downed tree cracked his roof because he was situated right under the roof when it cracked. Given his circumstance, a lack of electricity and complaints about miscommunications from inept Chatham elected-officials will, of course, take a distant second because, right now, your neighbor is having trouble just communicating with himself. Please be a friendly neighborhood Vegemite and go back to your neighbor and cart him to the nearest therapist. The sooner he talks about his anguish the better his chances at reclaiming his life and possibly getting his roof fixed. By the way, did you offer to fix his roof since it looks like you got everything figured out?

To 07928chat - I think you owe Laura a huge apology and show of gratitude. Laura is the sole Township Official who not only communicated regularly with township residents but she was also hugely proactive in trying to rally the community to help neighbors. On day one of the storm, she asked residents to let her know of elderly neighbors so she could check on them, she worked with another resident to coordinate the firewood collection and sharing of generators, and yet another resident to coordinate a trunk or treat today for the children not in school today. She's communicated through her government Facebook page numerous times a day and her network has then worked to get the word out. She's been chasing down jcp&l and pse&g to find where they're working and to share that information. She's got residents sharing gas line information and even gas cans. And oh, by the way, that food you te at the CES, she personally paid for. Shame on you. Write in Vote - LAURA ALI - for Township Committee. She's proactive and forward thinking and we need to keep her on the Township Committee.

To 07928chat ... I'm Laura Ali's Dad ..... Shame on you. My daughter has done more during these hard times than any other person in the Township. She has walked the neighborhoods bringing food and cheer to the elderly. She has communicated regularly with our community. She has driven her car from neighborhood to neighborhood , talking to people and giving them hope while riding on fumes. She cares . Others should give 10 % of what she has given and we would be a lot better off. And that's what makes a Dad so proud. She's done all this and still manages to care for her 3 boys. Look into what you have given , before putting a knock on my

This statement by Chatham Township government seems to be avoiding responsibility for the false communication about 75%/93% of power supposed to have been restored by last night.
"Unfortunately the numbers put up by JCP&L yesterday and published through Nixle were inaccurate."
As far as I can tell JCP&L put up accurate numbers (see the links above to their webpages and my and other's comments) but Chatham Township police misread them and sent out a faulty Nixle message. That caused a lot of hopes to be prematurely raised and perhaps led people to come back to town, make plans inappropriately.
First of all I live in the Borough (obviously) so this is not really my fight- but my kids go to school in the township, etc. But if I lived in the Township I would want to know who was responsible for that Nixle message and then have appropriate action taken. Sending out that message was akin, in my book, to yelling fire in a crowded movie theater. I'm sure people got hurt a result- where is the accountability?
The borough's communication has been poor in my book too. They took too long to start reaching out to people. But as far as I know they have not screwed up and sent out seriously wrong information the way the Township did.

Thanks chat5. That is good info. I live in the briarwood condos on river road. The intersection of river road & southern is really a mess. Power poles split in half & the stoplight was even bent over. I agree that they should bury these lines already. I am surprised that we need those lines to get power when there is a line coming in from the town that crosses over at the briarwood complex & appears to be in perfect condition. Also, since the heat and hot water in our buildings are run by gas, we really should be able to use those things, but for some reason they are not available to us. Seems silly....

It pains me to have read so many negative comments on here about our elected officials, public employees and JCP&L. A catastrophic storm struck New Jersey 9 days ago and left devastation in its path. Those of us in Chatham lost power, maybe even a tree, but we are all still here and we should all be thankful for that. Some of you have chosen to use this forum to incite others against those who serve us. Mayor Harris, Mayor Hagner, your elected official's, the police or your public works employees caused this storm. None of these people can fix your power. Yet some of you find it in your own personal interest to criticize these people for "not doing enough" or putting out "wrong numbers".....REALLY? Your elected officials and public employees in both towns have put in many long days away from their families since this storm struck and should be commended for all that they are doing and have done. Rather then hide behind a computer writing senseless comments on the Chatham Patch, walk outside, find someone who is helping to clean up or restore your and thank them for all that they are doing to help the community in this time of need like so many of your neighbors already have !!

Richard -- you are wrong. Chatham Boro has been communicating effectively. Chatham Twp has not. I had to follow the boro twitter feed to get accurate and timely information. The Mayor should have been prepared with a communications plan after LAST YEAR. She's been slow and inaccurate. She was not prepared. She should be talking to people in the gas lines. She should be driving around town and confirming outages. She should be in the truck with the JCPL guy who is in charge of Chatham. She and the entire elected crew punted and we will remember.
