In the race for President of the United States, influential New Jersey political insiders say Republicans may benefit from a projected down voter turnout after Tropical Storm Sandy left much of the state without power through Tuesday.
According to surveys issued to political officials and influencers Monday, respondents from both sides of the aisle believe the storm will have an impact on how many voters head to the polls to vote in the general election.
Four years ago, the majority of voters in both Chatham Borough and Chatham Township chose John McCain, the then-GOP candidate, for president, according to information released by clerks in both towns. But New Jersey, overall, has favored a Democratic candidate in the past five presidential elections.
According to Monday's survey, voters from both parties agreed that Republicans would benefit from fewer voters visiting polls Tuesday.

Here's a list of candidates (click on the names to read profiles) you will be able to vote for at the polls and the races they are in:
- Chatham Borough Council: Incumbent Republicans John Holman and Len Resto each seek reelection to their second terms on the council. Democrat Michael Yodice is running for his first term for council on the Democratic ticket.
- Chatham Township Committee: After winning the primary election, Republican Kevin Sullivan will run against Democrat Richard Erich Templin for the single committee seat opening. It is the first election for both.
- Morris County Freeholders: Three regular-term seats are up for election, with Democrats Wasim Kahn, Toshiba Foster (Morristown) and Joy Singh taking on GOP candidates John Cesaro, John Krickus and David Scapicchio. Republican Hank Lyon will face Democrat Truscha Quatrone for an unexpired term.
- 11th Congressional District: Longtime Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, who faced no opposition in the GOP primary, will take on Democratic Challenger John Arvanites, who also had no opponents in the primary.
- U.S. Senate: U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D), the junior United States Senator from New Jersey who was first appointed in 2006 to fill Jon Corzine's seat, takes on Republican challenger Joe Kyrillos, who easily defeated three opponents in the primary.
- U.S. President: President Barack Obama faces former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
