Cops: Alleged Drunk Driver Rams Into Fence

A 70-year-old Basking Ridge man was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he repeatedly rammed his vehicle into a fence on Loantaka Way Friday afternoon, said Monday.

Officer Michael Sawyer and Sgt. Thomas Miller responded to a Loantaka Way residence Friday at 4:50 p.m., on a complaint that an allegedly intoxicated driver was ramming his vehicle into a fence on the property, police said.

The officers encountered Ronald Bell, 70, of Basking Ridge, sitting in his 2004 Ford wagon with heavy damage in front of the residence, according to police.

The property owner reported the driver, whom he did not know, repeatedly rammed his vehicle into a post by a barn on the property, then drove through two separate fences and across a field to get back onto Loantaka Way, police said.

Bell complained of injuries and was subsequently transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital by the , police said.

Police charged Bell with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.

Bell is scheduled to appear in municipal court on Feb. 14, police said.
