Edward "Ed" Xavier Powers, formerly of Chatham Township, died on Apr. 20 at home in the Morris View Center in Morris Plains. He was 97. Born and raised in Newark, Powers graduated from St. Benedict's Prep School in Newark. He lived in Chatham for many years before moving to the Morris View Center a few years ago. Two of his children live in the area; Susan in Madison and Edward in Morristown. Powers met his wife of 69 years, Charlotte, while both sang in the choir of Blessed Sacrament Church in Newark, and the couple married there. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, Powers and his wife settled in Chatham to raise a family. They were founding members of the Chatham Township Senior Citizens Club and parishioners of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church in Chatham Township. Powers was retired from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife) after a 41-year career.
